The assumptions behind the numbers
- Six characters per word including spaces and punctuation — close for English prose; Chinese counts characters directly.

Professional narrators are usually quoted per finished hour of audio, and a finished hour takes several hours of studio and editing time; an 80,000-word novel runs eight to ten finished hours. Rates vary widely by market and experience — the point of comparison is structural: with AI narration the cost scales with characters and the turnaround is hours, but you trade away the performance of a skilled human reader and, at some retailers, eligibility (Audible's ACX does not accept third-party AI narration at the time of writing).
